Unfortunately, this was a common story for a few years in the mid to late 90's for university campuses surrounded by small towns. It happened my freshman year at the University of Northern Iowa. A girl from some tiny little town in western Iowa (see: sheltered as all hell) came to college, met up with other kids and the new freedom that came without overbearing puritan parents watching over her every move because they live 5 hours away (the southwestern side of Iowa has a very conservative religious population and many counties are dry) created something of a powder keg. She went off the rails pretty quick partying and died after a binge. Of course the parents were shocked and had no idea how hard their kids were partying (this track is from the dad’s perspective). A few of these cases cropped up around that time at all three major Iowa universities and the epilogue of this track is that it prompted a debate about how responsible “all you can drink” nights are for bars. Not long after that and another incident at the University of Iowa, those $5-all-you-can-stand nights at bars that had become sort of a right of passing for campuses went away. I haven't looked to see if the statistics around college binge deaths have dropped off since then.
