I've noticed with some of my parents friends (empty nesters in their 60's) that there's a need to sort of get re-acquainted with one another after the kids move away. They'd basically become partners in an operation vs a couple in love over 20-30 years. It's not that they don't love each other it's just the whole excitement of having a soulmate has so worn away. There's a depression factor that goes with it. That said, I think a lot of people who find themselves in those positions are aware of what's gone on and are actively trying to rekindle what their marriage was like in the early days (to varying degrees of success). This song is an ode to those people
