about

John Deere is still a major employer in Waterloo and for a lot of people I knew, getting on in the factory or the foundry is a symbol of stability and forward momentum in life. However, being unionized meant that there were specific processes and procedures you needed to go through to actually reach that tenured promised land. In other words, they don't just hand you a job with union pay, benefits and pension. You meet people who get on, but for whatever reason, don’t make it through probation and sink into a worse position than they were to begin with. This is a guy who got on, but didn’t understand how the probation period worked and failed a drug test he didn’t realize was coming.
