about

Pretty much my take on some key themes that happened in Waterloo while I lived there over the course of 25 years. It was a town of industry with two major employers (Rathe and John Deere), and a recession wiped out the former and decimated the latter’s operations in the 80’s (I fact checked and indeed the estimate is that 10,000 jobs were lost in the period of about 5 years in a town of about 50,000). The town was never really quite the same and the population shrunk considerably, but unlike a lot of rustbelt towns to the east, it managed to bounce back and overcome a lot of the resentments and bitterness that a recession brings. So when I left it, it seemed like the community had made peace with it.
