I worked with a guy years ago as an appliance salesman who one day started taking night classes at the local community college. He would go on about pursuing a "Business Administration" 2 year degree and had this pamphlet they gave him that listed 75k a year as a salary one can attain with a degree like this (he wasn't all that clear on how averages worked). No matter what anyone said, he was absolutely convinced this was going to be waiting for him when he completed the two year degree because he went to a career fair and that's what they told him (curiously this discussion took place with the loan officer onsite). He merrily took out student loans to cover the costs. Then, after the Clinton-years boom of the late 90's, not only were there less jobs, but many recent graduates of the 3 universities within a 2 hour drive began settling for jobs because of the trickle down effect of these things- pushing the opportunities for the community college grads lower and lower. I ran into this guy some years later and indeed, he was still selling appliances and still paying off the loan.
