My dad was in human resources during the time all the mass layoffs happened so he spent a lot of time delivering bad news to people (don't shoot the messenger right?) and watching families undergo a lot of hardships. When a union votes to strike (which they did a couple times for John Deere in the 80's), workers get some reimbursement from their union dues, but it'd put strains on families. What made matters worse in the 80's was that this was all going on when the economy was tightening up so a lot of the jobs simply weren't there to be filled.
